[Image: This postcard, captioned 'The Appeal of Womanhood', was designed by Harold Bird to announce an anti-suffrage meeting at the Royal Albert Hall organised by the National League for Opposing Woman Suffrage. The central figure represents a 'womanly woman' wearing a feminine dress and flowers in her hair as she politely refuses the vote. Behind her a suffragette is depicted as the 'hysteric' or the 'shrieking sister', inelegantly leaping towards parliament brandishing a hammer. The postcard was sent to Lillian M Slade in 1912. The suffrage artist Louis Jacobs's later designed a riposte to Bird's representation. Her poster, also entitled 'The Appeal of Womanhood' and published by the Suffrage Atelier, shows a similar figure to Bird's 'womanly woman' apealling for the vote.]</text>

[Image: Postcard with photograph of women holding banners, flags and umbrellas. The banner at the front proclaims 'Kensington Women's Social and Political Union'.

The Women's Social and Political Union organised this procession on behalf of the Tax Resistance League. Members of the various suffrage groups which participated marched from Kingsway to Holloway and listened to speakers including Christabel Pankhurst. This was done to protest against the imprisonment in Holloway of Clemence Housman for non-payment of 'inhabited house duty'. Housman was a wood engraver and co-founder of artists' group the Suffrage Atelier. She was also a member of the WSPU and the Tax Resistance League. The TRL conducted a campaign of organised resistance to taxation, arguing that women should not have to pay tax until they were given the vote and could have a say in how the taxes were spent.]</text>
